There are three engine options: a new 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo diesel engine with 213 HP and 500 Nm, a 2.0-liter single turbo diesel engine with 180 HP and 420 Nm, and a 2.2-liter Duratorq diesel engine with 160 HP and 385 Nm torque. The new Ranger includes a wide range of safety kits which place it at the top of the class autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, driver alarm, traffic sign recognition, and high beam automatic.

Unlike some of the competition, when you opt for manual transmission, the Ranger does not get a reduction in peak torque. That’s a positive thing, leaving this Ranger feeling perky and ready to get off the ground, and matching the gearbox with its delivery of torque. The gear shift may feel a little bit like a knot, as most heavier-duty gearboxes are, but once you get the feeling, it’s easy to row through the gears.

Interior Design

The interior has always been one of the Ranger’s great strengths, integrating lots of innovation with a classic look and strong credentials for practicality. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, native navigation, and digital radio all run via a well-presented and easy-to-use operating system on the SYNC 3 infotainment monitor.

Two smaller digital displays in your binnacle, managed through the steering wheel, offer you additional readout and adaptability. The vertical tachometer doesn’t do much, but you don’t notice that you need it – the engine has its way to tell you it’s close to redline.

It’s also comfy to drive. The new ranger seats are embroidered with excellent comfort and bolstering, using manual adjustments and a steering wheel, which feels excellent quality. Electric power-assisted steering feels impressively light at low speeds, but at higher speeds, it slowly firms up. To a 4×4 ute, it gives a certain air of sophistication and works well.

Exterior Design

the new Ranger is typical of the breed as regards off-road performance. Ground clearance is exceptional, with the semi-flexible side steps sometimes being the first point of touch. That bulked-up bonnet may often feel a little challenging to get wheel alignment correct, but well-tuned traction systems (which work well with the locking rear differential)

The leaf-sprung back end provides a fair amount of articulation, and the reasonably long wheelbase leaves it looking sure-footed at sharp angles. A long wheelbase means the turning circle is not leading in class: 12.7 m.

Of course, some better all-terrain tyres would noticeably improve the amount of available grip, and consider some suspension modifications if you start running out of ground clearance. However, the Ranger is a reliable off-roader in its base form.

The Ranger is one of the 4×4 ute batch’s larger, both in terms of dimensions and appearance. Compared to other utes, the 3220 mm wheelbase is reasonably long, which helps to yield a decent ride for a 4×4 ute. No ute has a trip that can be described as straightforwardly smooth and comfortable, particularly when a few leaf springs have a decent payload (978 kg) to contend with.
